Portable Air Conditioning Units

There are a few solutions to keep a room cool. The home and office air conditioners are divided in two main categories: the wall-mounted (or fixed) and the portable ones. Standard wall-attached AC units are suitable for rooms that tend to get hot and are populated quite a bit. Mobile cooling units are most indicated for situations in which you may have access to several rooms, but you are not going to use them all at the same time.

Cheap Air Conditioners

Before getting into what ventless is, let’s take a look at a few principles of fluid cooling. Simply put, it’s all about heat, which is a form of energy. An air conditioning machine will move heat from one place to another, much like a fridge does. A refrigerator moves the heat from the inside of its housing to its outside, namely the room where it’s located. An air con machine will move heat from the inside of a room to the outside of the building.

Cold is just the absence of heat. Now heat (which is energy, remember?) cannot just disappear, but it can be moved. Thus any air con machine will need have an inlet in the room and an outlet out the house.

Classic air con machines have a box with a fan mounted on the outside of the building, in the immediate vicinity of the room being cooled. Heat travels through the pipes that connect the two units and is literally exhausted outdoors; it is vented out by the fan.

Ventless Air Conditioner

A ventless air conditioning machine also throws out hot air, but it does so without an outside unit. The indoor unit does the job of the outdoor venting unit in a classic system. The advantage is obvious: a ventless air con machine needs just a hole in the wall that allows the hot air to escape. No more need for the outside venting unit.

There are some costs to this, though. In simple terms, a single box will accomplish the job of two boxes. The principles in place are the same, so no higher efficiency here. One disadvantage is that the indoor unit is larger than a similar unit with an outside vent.

Then, the mentioned hole is much bigger than the one for standard AC units, because it carries air and not just a liquid. Moreover, the fan itself that is responsible for pushing the hot air out will operate indoors. This fan is powered by an engine and engines themselves generate heat. Therefore, the same caliber ventless unit will use more energy than its classic counterpart. Moreover, there is the exhaust pipe, which needs to be fairly short, to prevent too much heat being lost back in the room.

A common mistake people make with ventless machines is to make no hole in the wall whatsoever and just put the exhaust pipe out a window. This will surely save one from making any wall alterations, but will also significantly diminish the efficiency of the air conditioning setup.

At any rate, although a little more expensive, ventless units can be useful as quick, mobile solutions, where little or no wall modifications are possible. Portable air conditioning units are the fastest and most economical way to cool your space.
